NOVELTY ARCHITECTURE NEWARK OHIO
In 1997 worldwide news, nearly twenty years later this seven-story replica of a market basket in Newark (Ohio) is for sale. 180,000-square foot is vacant, including a cafeteria, a theatre and thirty-one restrooms.
This iconic basket building was once the headquarters of the Longaberger company; manufacturer and distributor of handcrafted maple wood baskets. Beautifully made of locally sourced cherry wood, harvested in Hanover and processed in the firm’s own mill. The giant basket is organized around a 30,000 square foot atrium that floods the interior with natural light.
The Basket Building is a nice example of novelty architecture, since it takes the shape of the company’s biggest seller: the Medium Market Basket. The building is 160 times larger than its model and boasts two handles.
